The African Elephant can weigh up to 6 tons and stand up to 4 meters tall. At Mount Etjo we currently have more than 30 individuals, consisting of various family groups and bulls.

Elephants forage about 18 hours a day to get a sufficient supply of food, they need to eat about 5% of their body weight daily.

Due to the nature of their feeding habits they wander big distances at a time, they therefore can be seen anywhere on the Reserve where there are a sufficient food supply.

The Elephants at Mount Etjo have a very good natured demeanor and can sometimes be observed from close proximity.

Elephants have a life expectancy of around 65 - 75 years and can grow tusks as heavy as 100+ pounds
